Cagliari midfielder Daniele Dessena has been on the receiving end of abuse on social media due to his decision to wear rainbow laces in a stand against homophobia.

The former Sampdoria man sported rainbow laces in last Sunday’s match against Inter in a decision which has been met with praise by many outlets in the Italian media.

However reports from Calcio News are claiming that some people have taken to Twitter to criticise and abuse the 26-year-old Italian for his support to the campaign which is aimed at addressing homophobia in football.

The rainbow lace initiative was introduced in Italy by betting company Paddy Power, the Arcigay LBGT rights association and the Fondazione Candido Cannavo.

Ahead of last weekend’s fixtures, rainbow-coloured laces were given to all professional male and female football players in Italy in a hope that they would support the campaign by wearing them.
