Paolo Cannavaro NapoliPaolo Cannavaro has spoken of his fondest Napoli memories and future challenges after sealing a transfer to Sassuolo.

The former Partenopei captain spoke to the fans upon his departure, ending a seven year spell and a 10-year association with the club.

And the 32-year-old pinpointed the sides 2012 Coppa Italia win and, especially, promotion back to Serie A in 2007.

“I lifted the Coppa Italia as captain – that victory will stay in everyone’s memory, it was an incredibly proud moment,” he told reporters. “But on June 10, 2007  against Genoa beat all other emotions – it was our rebirth.

“I was with the club when few believed, and that makes me even more proud.”

The centre-back also spoke of his move to relegation battlers Sassuolo, insisting it is one that suits him.

“Many thanks to the leadership of Sassuolo, they are giving me a great opportunity,” he added. “Many people may turn up their noses but I trust this club – they have an important project.”

Cannavaro was at pains to stress his continued devotion to his childhood club and hometown team.

“I thank all of the fans – Napoli will always be in my heart. Always has been, always will be,” he said.

“Now, even more than before, I want to say that I will always be a fan of Napoli.

“When Sassuolo play Napoli I hate to think of what it will be like in those days and don’t want to think on it right now.”
