Gian Piero Gasperini has stated that he believes Alberto Gilardino has a good chance of making Italy’s World Cup squad and deserves to go to Brazil.

Gasperini’s arrival at Genoa for a second spell in September 2013 has led to improved performances and the Grifone have been transformed from relegation candidates to a solid mid-table outfit.

Much of that transformation is down to the form of Gilardino who has netted 11 goals in 23 games this season.

“In my view Gilardino has a good chance of going to the World Cup in Brazil,” Gasperini told Radio Club 91.

“He is scoring regularly and putting in consistently good performances, thanks also to the support of his teammates.

“Napoli are certainly an excellent squad with a fearsome strike force, but they do leave you spaces at the back. Those are the spaces we’ll need to make the most of.”

Gilardino now 31-years-old won his last cap for Italy in October.  He has 20 goals in 58 caps.
