Following his side’s 2-0 triumph at home to Atalanta, Fiorentina head coach Vicenzo Montella claimed his team earned a hard fought victory against an opposition who battled to the very end.

Goals from Josip Ilicic and Rafal Wolski secured a vital three points for the Viola in their battle for the third and final Champions league spot and after the game the Italian tactician took time to praise his teams resolve and desire to earn the three points.

“This victory wasn’t a forgone conclusion, it was a team victory.” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.

“We faced a team who caused us a lot of problems right till the end, but overall based on our play and chances I think we deserved this victory.

“I saw real desire and of course we can get better.

“Today I decided to rest people that needed a break and now we can look ahead to the upcoming games.”

The former Catania coach also commended Josip Ilicic’s performance after the Bosnian forward scored a wonderful free-kick to give Fiorentina the lead.

“Today he (Ilicic) worked very hard for the team, he is a player that needs time, but I am happy with his performance tonight.”
