Day five of the 2014 installment of the Viareggio Cup threw up rather a big shock in the form of the elimination of Roma.

Alberto De Rossi’s side are widely regarded, or were certainly last season at least, as one of the peninsula’s best but they have been eliminated from contention.

However, there was welcome news for some Serie A sides as Torino, Palermo and Atalanta (all sides to watch out for) and they join Envigado who played Roma and qualified from that group as well as Livorno.

Federico Varano’s late goal for Atalanta secured their safe passage as they eked out a 3-2 win against Club Guarani to ensure they will top their group undefeated with seven points.

Napoli put six goals past a listless APIA Leichhardt with Salvatore Di Iorio filling his boots with a hat-trick but it was not enough to keep them in the competition.

Holders Anderlecht and Palermo advance from the second group, sharing seven points apiece with Cephas Malele’s 94th minute penalty helping the Rosanero salvage a late draw when they met.

Sergio Zanetti (older brother of Javier) and his Benfica men were soundly beaten 3-1 by Livorno meaning that the Amaranto also advance by two points ahead of Giallorossi who go out despite handing Envigado their first loss of the tournament.

Siena’s man in form Simone Monni scored twice to help his side beat Stabaek 3-1 but they still suffered the heartbreak of going out at the hands of Torino, Emanuel Gyasi getting on the score sheet in their 2-2 draw with Santos Laguna, meaning all three sides finished up with five points but Toro and Santos are the sides moving through.
