AC Milan defender Philippe Mexes admits that the Diavolo needed to win their recent match against Fiorentina in order to help the team gain confidence.

The Rossoneri defeated the Viola 2-0 at the Stadio Franchi on Wednesday and the 31-year-old, who scored his team’s first goal in the match, insists that securing a positive result was the most important thing as the struggling Milan side look to end their season on a better note.

Mexes spoke to Milan Channel on Thursday about the importance of gaining the three points in Florence, while also commenting on his goal.

“Yesterday it was essential to bring home the win,” said the Frenchman.

“It’s good for our morale, we could have even won against Lazio in Rome on Sunday too. It’s a success that’s good for the whole group.

“We have always remained so compact, in such a difficult time it earned us a positive result. We are working well, it was essential to have won in Florence.

“My goal? [Sulley] Muntari was also able to score, but what counts most is the result, it doesn’t matter who scores.

“Though of course I’m happy for goal that I scored.”
