After declaring that a move to Juventus would be a ‘backwards step in his career’, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti has tried to make amends by declaring his respect for the Turin giants.

The 21-year-old has been coming on leaps and bounds at the Parc des Princes since moving to the French capital for €12 million from Pescara in the summer of 2012, and has long been linked with a move to the Juventus Stadium, although he recently ruled out a potential move to the Italian Champions.

“My words were misinterpreted, the next time I’ll be more careful,” Verratti told Rai Sport.

“I have great respect for Juventus and I would never allow myself to say things like that.”

The deep-lying playmaker, often likened to Juve’s Andrea Pirlo, has been included in Italy coach Cesare Prandelli’s squad for Wednesday evening’s friendly against Spain at the Estadio Vincente Calderon, and he stands a good chance of making the cut for summer’s World Cup due to his good form with Les Parisiens.
