Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic insists that his upcoming departure to Inter at the end of the current season has nothing to do with former coach Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The 32-year-old captain recently announced his decision to join the Nerazzurri at the end of the 2013-14 campaign and some believe it could be due to the current state of the Red Devils squad under new coach David Moyes, as they’re struggling to adapt to the manager’s style of play.

Vidic spoke to Sky Sports UK ahead of United’s home match against rivals Liverpool on Sunday, which they ended up losing 3-0, and cleared up the reason for his departure, while also reflecting on his time with the club and commenting on their poor results as of late.

“What went wrong this season? There has been a lot of talk, we changed our manager,” said the veteran, who was sent off in Sunday’s match against Liverpool after receiving two yellow cards.

“It’s a year of transition. They’re surprised that it’s not going the same as last year. I knew that it was going to be difficult and that we wouldn’t be winning as many trophies.

“Moyes needs time to adapt to the players and the same goes for us with him, but I didn’t think things would have gone this bad.

“My departure from United linked to Ferguson’s departure? The fact that Ferguson has left has nothing to do with my decision to leave the club.

“It’s reached the time for a change and now I look to a new challenge in Italy with the shirt of Inter.

“My memories of United? I’ve had nine great seasons here. I have fond memories and I’ve grown up as a man.

“It’s hard to think of how much I still have to play for United. I would want to end at the top with good performances, both individually and from the team.”
