While qualification for the Europa League remains the target for Inter this season director Marco Fassone has reiterated that the future of Walter Mazzarri does not rest on that objective and praised the work he has done with the Nerazzurri.

However, while outlining the work going on behind the scenes to improve the Serie A clubs financial outlook Fassone did admit that European qualification, particularly a return to the Champions League will be fundamental to achieve that.

“The Europa League is a definite goal for Inter after missing European competition for a year,” Fassone told Sky Sport Italia.

“We asked the coach to lead the team as high as possible and he is doing a great job and, as I said, we are planning for the future.

“Mazzarri is included in this and there is no correlation between his future and qualification for the Europa League. We will discuss his renewal.

“We want to bring Inter back into [financial] balance over the next two or three years, a lot will depend on qualification to the Champions League as that weighs heavily on the turnover of a club.

“Now there is a new manager who will be responsible for revenues from the stadium, Luca Innocenti, who is from Viagogo, then within a month in will come a marketing director and another for international sales.

“Also the area media and communications will be reinforced.

“We hope to come back to being competitive on the pitch as early as next year, and be firmly in the top three in the short-term.

“On the market there have been many names, but I think that will come two or three new players to be included in the current squad.”
