Massimiliano Allegri is close to an agreement to become the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, according to reports in Italy.

Current boss Tim Sherwood is likely to leave White Hart Lane in the summer and Allegri is said to be the favourite to take over despite rumours linking Ajax coach Frank de Boer to the role.

Tuttomercatoweb report that the former AC Milan coach is in the number one choice to take the Spurs job with an agreement practically reached between the two parties.

Should the 46-year-old make the move to North London, he would link up with Tottenham technical director and fellow Italian Franco Baldini, a move that would likely rejuvenate the latter’s role at the club.

The former Roma director of football has had several behind the scenes clashes with Sherwood and chairman Daniel Levy over the impact of signings he identified, such as former Roma star Erik Lamela who has hardly figured for Spurs since joining the club.

Allegri was sacked in January with Milan languishing in the bottom half of the table, but he guided the Rossoneri to their first Serie A title in seven years during his first season in charge in 2011.
