Thomas Vermaelen ArsenalNapoli coach Rafa Benitez has been linked with a move for Belgium and Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Benitez is looking to reinforce his defence in the summer and after the move for Kalibou Koulibaly is wrapped up, the Spanish tactician is looking to add further depth with the 28-year-old.

Vermaelen’s current Arsenal deal expires in 2015 and with contract talks set for before the World Cup this summer between the defender and Arsene Wenger , a move could be in the cards should things not work out with the Gunners.

According to Il Mattino, after the completion of the purchase of Koulibaly from Genk, Vermaelen is the next player Benitez would like to add to strengthen the Partenopei defence.

Benitez considers the central defender perfect for the Napoli back line and is working personally to close the deal as soon as possible.

Vermaelen has made only 13 appearances for the Gunners in the Premier League this season.
