Roma have had their first approach for Tottenham midfielder Paulinho rejected by the London club.

Chief executive Franco Baldini reportedly turned down the Giallorossi’s offer despite recent reports that the Brazilian is set to join the Italian club at the end of the season.

Rome-based newspaper Il Tempo reports that the capital club and Tottenham have been in touch for weeks but talks have stopped and will only reopen if Paulinho openly states that he wants to leave and join the Lupi.

Roma will play in the Champions League next year and Paulinho would provide much-needed depth, considering that Kevin Strootman will miss the first part of the season after tearing his ACL in March.
