Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon believes his team took the proper approach in their Europa League match against Benfica on Thursday despite being eliminated from the competition.

The Bianconeri were unable to score against the Aguias at Juventus Stadium in their second leg semi-final tie on May 1, even with the Portuguese side eventually being down to nine men by the end of the match, which saw them forced out of the tournament 2-1 on aggregate.

Buffon spoke to Sky Sport Italia about Juve’s performances in both legs and congratulated Benfica on making it to the final, though he feels that the Serie A side played well enough to proceed to the final.

“Both of the matches were balanced, even to the point where we probably deserved to do a bit better,” said the Italian international.

“These were two matches where all details made the difference and in games like these you can either win, or like in our case, you can lose.

“We were not humiliated or reorganised, we played at the proper level. Good for them to advance, but we weren’t annihilated.

“Against a team who at European level, if I’m not mistaken, occupies the sixth position in the rankings, we’ve played up to par, we played the right game.

“Congratulations to them for making it to the next round.”
