Torino president Urbano Cairo commented on a very special day for the Granata and claimed Europa League qualification would be an award for the fans.

The Granata defeated Chievo on Sunday to stay in the final Europa League qualification place on the 65th anniversary of the Superga Air disaster which claimed the lives of Il Grande Torino.

Cairo spoke to Sky Sport after the victory over the Flying Donkeys at the Stadio Bentegodi .

“Today is a special day because of the sad occurrence that touches us closely,” Cairo said. “Today there was a touching moment of silence before the match where not even a bug was flying and for that I want to thank the supporters of Chievo.

“We are having a very positive campaign which we didn’t expect at the beginning of the season.

“We have two matches left to obtain an objective that teams much more well equipped [than Torino] are running for.  But were at the ball and we have to dance.  We hope for a great end [to the season].”

Cairo also compared his current Torino squad to the 1991-92 vintage led by Emiliano Mondonico who finished the Serie A season in third place, and also contested the UEFA Cup final losing out to Ajax on aggregate.

“Marcheggiani was a great goalkeeper, but Padelli is showing good signs.  It was a very good team that of ’92 and the one of this year is also excellent.

“I have learned to put myself on the second level even if I am pleased by the results obtained and I would like to enter in the history of Torino, but most of all the fans and this team deserve a reward like this.”

Torino will host Parma at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino next Sunday.
