With their relegation confirmed following a 1-0 loss against Fiorentina, Livorno boss Davide Nicola said the club always knew it would be tough to try and survive in Serie A.

That result means that the Tuscan club who were promoted last season have been immediately sent straight back to the second tier after a disappointing campaign.

“We gave everything in this game but sometimes when you face a team who are stronger, then that is not enough,” Nicola toldĀ Sky Sport Italia. “I saw a team with great mentality.

“What relegated us in the end? I think there are many evaluations you can make. Firstly, there is a basic inconsistency. We started off at a handicap because we decided to try and survive with these men [the ones who gained promotion] and we have done everything possible to remain.

“There is a discourse much larger to make about the overall quality of the team but we knew this was going to be tough for us to try and survive.”
