The 27-year-old endured a frustrating second half of the season with AC Milan but is part of the Azzurri squad and also spoke of his return to the international fold and a host of other topics surrounding the 2014 World Cup.

“[England] they have changed so much, they have created a good mix and they may be the revelation of this World Cup,” admitted Abate during a press conference at the Porto Real Resort.

“It is going to be a tough game, but I am convinced we will arrive in the best shape, both physically and mentally.

“[Cesare] Prandelli knows what I can give, as I have always done for Milan and Italy.

“I was not afraid of missing out on the World Cup because I have always been a part of the Azzurri group.

“The coach had to make choices and I am glad he chose me.”

“Preparation? We did a lot of work at Coverciano, it was heavy and exhausting. We worked hard, so I believe we will be in the best shape to start with.

“We must not put too much pressure on Mario [Balotelli]. Unlike any other country, we have no huge individuals, we are one big group whose quality we must exploit to the full.

“Mario is definitely a great striker, but his burden of responsibility should be the same as the others.”
