Belgium captain Vincent Kompany says his team is full of confidence going in to the World Cup, describing preparations as ‘perfect’.

The Rode Duivels kick off their first World Cup for 12 years against Algeria in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday, and have been tipped by many as potential dark horses to win the tournament, and Kompany admits that to do well in Brazil would be a dream for him after making his international debut in 2004.

“Time flies when you’re having fun, ten years. Time went by very quickly, but I think during this period we have learned a lot,” said the Manchester City defender.

“I have been extremely lucky in my career and as a child I always wanted to lift a trophy and why not a World Cup?
“Is it my moment against Algeria? Not yet. I will remember it all my life but I have high ambitions and I have to go a long way in this tournament.

“I am really curious to see what the result will be because our preparation has been perfect.”

The tournament so far has seen lots of goals fly in at both ends, but the 28-year-old knows that not conceding goals will be very important for Belgium if they are to compliment their notable attacking talent that includes the likes of Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku.

“As a defender, you see so many goals scored and defenders are a bit more aware of this at this moment in time.

“Our quality is organisation and as long as we stay organised we usually defend well. If we defend well as a team, we will be OK.”

Kompany has won 59 caps so far for his country, and goes to the World Cup on the back of a second Premier League title in two years with Manchester City.
