While the members of Mexico’s World Cup squad will be lamenting their last gasp defeat to the Netherlands on Sunday evening defender Hector Moreno will have greater reason to feel disappointed after suffering a serious injury late in the firs-half.

After the heat in Fortaleza had played its part in a subdued opening period El Tri took an early lead in the second through Giovanni dos Santos, but with just three minutes of normal time remaining the Dutch levelled through Wesley Sneijder before an injury time penalty from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar ended their hopes of progress.

After the match coach Miguel Herrera and his players had been critical of the actions of Arjen Robben when apparently exaggerating challenges, particularly the one that led to the crucial penalty, however, it was the challenge on the Bayern Munich man by Moreno that Mundo Deportivo have confirmed caused a fractured tibia.

Although no penalty was awarded after the Espanyol defender had recklessly slide into the Dutchman he was stretched off the pitch and taken immediately to a local hospital where the injury was discovered.
