Wayne Rooney’s starting position in England’s World Cup Group D match against Uruguay is reportedly under threat.

The Manchester United forward has come in for a lot of criticism following his performance against Italy in their first World Cup hit out.

Rooney played on the left hand flank in an unfamiliar role to him and was seldom involved throughout.

The Daily Mail’s Wednesday edition has led with: “Wayne may be dropped.” The Daily Mirror has opted to suggest that the 28-year-old will play as a super sub.

Roy Hodgson’s side will be looking to keep their World Cup dream alive when they take on Uruguay on Thursday evening in a must-win match for both teams.

Italy sit in second spot on three points, while Costa Rica lead the group on goal difference after their win against La Celeste on Saturday.
