Passing statistics have been recorded since the 1966 World Cup and the Azzurri have beaten a record set by Denmark in 1986.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy completed 554 successful passes with 93.19 per cent accuracy in their 2-1 win against England in Manaus.
Denmark were previous record holders, who achieved a passing accuracy of 92.72 per cent when they defeated Uruguay 6-1 in their 1986 World Cup match in Mexico.
Italy’s passing quality was also higher than possession-heavy teams like Chile and Spain at this World Cup. La Roja completed 523 successful passes in their 3-1 win against Australia and La Furia Roja completed 521 successful passes in their 5-1 loss to the Netherlands.
Before the encounter against the Three Lions, the Azzurri’s most successful passing completion rate was 88.3 per cent in the 1-1 draw against Cameroon in the 1982 World Cup.
Italy’s win against England also prompted La Gazzetta dello Sport to refer to the Azzurri’s possession-based game against the English as “TikItalia”.
