England national team captain Steven Gerrard has revealed that he’s proud of his country’s performance against Italy on Saturday despite their failure to secure a victory.

The Three Lions may have fallen 2-1 to the Azzurri in their first match of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but the 34-year-old admits that he’s more than satisfied with the determination shown by his team-mates and he believes that they can turn their luck around in their remaining two matches of the tournament’s group stage.

Gerrard spoke to Sky Sports after England’s loss to Italy in Manaus about the appreciation for his team’s effort and insisted that the national team have moved on since their defeat to the Italians in the Euro 2012 quarter-finals.

“It’s always disappointing to lose a game but I’m certainly not disappointed in my team-mates with the effort, desire and commitment in the performance we gave,” said the Liverpool captain.

“We can’t be down after a performance like that. We’ve certainly moved on from two years ago. I’m really proud of how we played.

“We can turn this mood around. Of course the result hurts but we’re big players – we’re men – we’ve got to get on.”

England are set to face Uruguay, who shockingly lost their first group stage match against Costa Rica in a 3-1 result, next on Thursday.
