Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah was left ruing his side’s performance in their World Cup 2014 opening match.

The Black Stars, who were paired with the United States for the third consecutive time, were defeated by the Stars and Stripes for the first time since their meeting in 2006.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s men came out roaring with Clint Dempsey breaking the deadlock inside the first minute, and despite Ghana finally finding an equalizer through Andre Ayew, their hopes of a draw were quickly dashed when John Brooks grabbed a second to put his side in front.

And Appiah feels that his side’s defeat all boils down to a lack of focus.

“That early goal was a disaster, and playing at this high level, any loss of concentration will cost you,” the 53-year-old stated to SuperSports.

“[However] it was quite unfortunate that despite dominating the game, we were unable to score [earlier], but [all in all] we could have done better.”

Appiah was also asked about his controversial decision to leave Michael Essien and Kevin Prince-Boateng on the bench.

“My intention was to bring them on when the US team got tired… But these things happen,” he said.

Ghana will next have to face off against Germany, who demolished Portugal earlier in the day 4-0, and the former defender recognizes that die Mannschaft will not be an easy opponent.

“We’ll [have to] do our best to play well against [Germany].”
