Hellas Verona have completed the signing of goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini from Manchester United on a free transfer.

The 19-year-old was out of contract at Old Trafford and had informed the club that he did not wish to renew his contract after failing to break through.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the Italy under-19 international will be back-up to Hellas’ number one goalkeeper Rafael next season.

After spells with the youth teams of SPAL and Fiorentina, Gollini made the move to Manchester at the age of 16 but despite being a regular at under-18 level, failed to make more than a couple of appearances for the under-21/reserve team.

At the time of his move to England in 2011, Fiorentina’s sporting director Pantaleo Corvino attacked Manchester United and the player over the transfer, claiming that “of the 150 young players to go abroad, no-one has been able to earn a place in the first team”.
