England coach Roy Hodgson claimed his side are devastated with the defeat to Uruguay and fully believed his side could have won on the night.

The Three Lions went behind to a Luis Suarez header before Wayne Rooney got a second half equaliser only for Suarez to break fans hearts with a late winner.

Speaking to ITV Sport the England boss said'”We’re more than disappointed, we’re devastated. We believed we could do enough today to get a result in this game.

“Having worked so hard to counter that first goal from Luis Suarez I fully believed we would go on to win the game or at least draw.

“To concede the second as we did was an unbelievable blow and I don’t quite know what to say at this moment in time.”

Steven Gerrard got the final touch on a long ball that fell to his Liverpool team mate Suarez who slotted home the winner.

“It was a goal we don’t expect to concede with the kind of players we have. I thought we’d dealt with Uruguay’s attack well up to that point,” Hodgson continued.

“When [Wayne] Rooney scored I thought we would go on to win. They’d been nowhere near our goal all game, but on both occasions we haven’t done enough,” he concluded.

England’s qualification is now out of their hands with a draw between Costa Rica and Italy enough to condemn them to an early exit.
