England boss Roy Hodgson has once more backed under-fire striker Wayne Rooney today, amid speculation the forward might be dropped for tomorrow’s clash with Uruguay.

The Three Lions manager stated that had it not been for Rooney, England may never have qualified for the finals in Brazil.

As reported by BBC Sport, Hodsgon said, “Were it not for his wonderful header against Poland [in a qualifier] we might not be here.”

“He has broad enough shoulders. In my two years he has more goals and assists than anyone.”

The Manchester United hit-man has been subject to heavy criticism for his performance in the defeat against Italy, where he was given a wide role in England’s front line.

Despite his assist for Daniel Sturridge’s equaliser, fans and pundits alike were not impressed with his overall display and calls for him to be benched have since filled newspaper headlines all over the UK.
