England coach Roy Hodgson has praised Uruguay’s defence after his team’s loss to the South Americans, claiming that they were stronger than the English.

The Three Lions lost 2-1 to the Celeste in Sao Paolo in their second Group D match at the 2014 World Cup, and although England attacked, Hodgson said that the Uruguayan defenders were too strong for his team.

“I don’t know if I was expecting more from my [players],” Hodgson said in the post-match press conference. “We worked well, above all at the start.

“The truth is that they were stronger, especially in defence. We controlled the play for long enough periods but their defence was very strong.

“We created some opportunities to score but we did not succeed as we would have wanted.”

England are now out of the World Cup after Costa Rica pulled off a shock 1-0 victory against Italy.
