Not seen as one of the favourites to lift the World Cup trophy aloft in Rio de Janeiro on July 13th, have Italy changed people’s perceptions after their 2-1 victory over England?

No is probably the answer. As in anything, it is too early to make grand statements of imperious form in Brazil. Especially on the world stage where there are so many exceptional, talented and experienced teams and players still to play against and prove yourself against.

Instead, a more refined perception. One that is this Italy team is experienced, subtle in approach and tactically aware. In a finely balanced match against England they had the mentality, and ultimately the extra bit of class in finishing to overcome the Three Lions.

Italy weren’t scintillating on Saturday night in Manaus, but under strenuous conditions played accordingly and were assured in possession, especially in their central hub in midfield. That allowed Mario Balotelli’s bravado to lead the line while Antonio Candreva and Claudio Marchisio were allowed to make swashbuckling runs into the penalty area to assist the flamboyant striker. The area of concern stemmed at the back as Gabriel Paletta looked shaky and Giorgio Chiellini was an unorthodox left wing back.

There could well be changes in defence for the Costa Rica match.

Italy trainingThe result though will serve them well to build upon going forward in the World Cup. As is with tournament football, you never want to peak in the group stage, the aim is to gradually improve from one match to the next. Italy will certainly strive to do this.

Against harder opposition they may face a more daunting task. But remember that the team against England arguably wasn’t their strongest, with Cesare Prandelli able to change personal here and there according to the opposition or circumstances during the match.

Of these is Chiellini moving back to his natural centre back position while Mattia De Sciglio will hope to return from injury at left back. The midfield looks assured while there can be alterations up front with possible additions of Ciro Immobile, Alessio Cerci or even Lorenzo Insigne to add some impetus in attack and keep Italy evolving.

That will help Italy rotate and freshen the team around their core starters and keep opposition coaches guessing their team selection.

Their tactics will continue to be the same though, with their players increasingly molding into a consistent, refined team.

In an exciting, pulsating opening week at the World Cup calm heads and composure will be needed in the latter stages in order to succeed. Italy have that in abundance while having a stinging attack when called upon. Combine them then the Azzurri have the ability to go far.

Italy will of course carry great respect and reputation with them and no one will take them lightly. But they have started well and have laid a foundation to build upon and progress from, starting with getting out of a tricky looking group. Reach the knockout rounds and anything is possible. And Italy are one of the best in knockout situations.

Serious contenders? Not yet. But you never rule them out. Keep a close eye on Italy.
