Following his side’s breathless draw with Portugal, Jurgen Klinsmann was disappointed that his United States side were unable to hold on for the win.

Silvestre Varela’s header denied the Yanks the opportunity to ensure qualification in that game, meaning they have to get a result against Germany to ensure their progress.

“We were that close,” he lamented immediately after the game. “We had enough chances to score four or five goals.”

“It was an amazing game,” he went on, “our guys gave an amazing performance. It was all anyone could ask for.”

Having fallen behind to an early Nani strike, the Yanks fought back in the second half through Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey before Varela’s last-gasp equaliser left Klinsmann in no doubt what his side needs to do in their final game against his home country.

“Now we’ve got to beat Germany”, he confirmed.

With both the United States and Germany sitting level on four points, three ahead of Ghana and Portugal, a draw would be enough to see both qualify.
