After seeing off Cameroon 4-1 to top Group A Brazil defender David Luiz believes that the difficulties faced during their opening three games of these World Cup finals have seen them mature together and will provide the confidence required to succeed.

The Selecao began the campaign going a goal behind to Croatia before recovering to win 3-1, then struggled to breakdown a resolute Mexican defence, and were also pegged back during Monday nights’ match with the Indomitable Lions.

“It was a great game, I’m very happy,” Luiz told Sky.

“The game was very intense, the team has proved it is mature.

“We have ended the group in the first place and that gives us confidence.

“We have played a good first half of the tournament, but not excellent.

“During the first match we were very excited, but we were organised. Mexico in the second match was OK and today we showed great cohesion.”
