Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has expressed his delight at the mental strength his side displayed in their 2-1 win over Algeria in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday.

The Red Devils were facing the prospect of a disappointing opening defeat, until substitutes Marouane Fellaini and Dries Mertens struck in the last 20 minutes to give the Belgians their first win at the World Cup since 2002.

Wilmots told HLN.be that his side will build on the momentum they ended the match with.

“In the first half we had 67 percent of the ball, but we did not have a clear-cut chance,” he said. “During the second half, we showed our mental strength, now we need to recover and put the focus on the next game against Russia.”

Belgium take on Fabio Capello’s Russians in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, and a win would see Wilmots men progress to the Round of 16.
