Brazil legend Pele has spoken of his support for under-fire striker Wayne Rooney in the lead up to today’s crucial clash with Uruguay.

The former Santos striker defended the England man and said that he should not be burdened with so much pressure.

He told Sky Sports News, “I have followed him for a long time and I like the way he plays.

“If I was a coach, he would be one of the players in my team, no doubt, because he plays with heart and spirit, but it is the same situation as we see in Brazil.

“You cannot put responsibility on one player in the World Cup. Brazil have put too much responsibility on Neymar in his first World Cup. I like Rooney.”

There is still speculation as to where Roy Hodgson will play his star striker, though it is widely believed Rooney will move back to his preferred central role behind forward Daniel Sturridge against the South Americans.
