Portugal star ruled out of World Cup

Portuguese defender Fabio Coentrao has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup with a thigh injury.

The Real Madrid left back started in the opening match of Group G for Portugal against Germany before coming off injured at the hour mark as his side were hammered 4-0.

According to the clinical and imaging tests performed, Fabio Coentrao is unfit for competition for a period exceeding the duration of the World Cup, read an official statement on their website.

” Fabio Coentrao has suffered a muscular injury. Grade II of the adductor longus muscle of the right thigh. He regrets leaving the World Cup.

He will travel on Wednesday afternoon from Guarulhos airport in Sao Paolo to Lisbon. He will later present himself at Real Madrid to begin the treatment process.

The status of the tests performed on goalkeeper Rui Patricio and striker Hugo Almeida were also given.

Almeida has a grade I muscular injury at the bicipede of the femoral muscle which occurs at the posterior region of the left thigh. Patricio has a grade I muscle injury of the anterior rectus muscle of the left thigh.

“Both of them may undergo clinical recovery during competition at the start of specific individual and progressive rehabilitation program.”

With Coentrao ruled out of the World Cup while having Patricio and Almeida doubtful for the remaining games of Group G, the Portuguese will also miss the services of Pepe who was sent off against Germany.
