Costa Rica defender Michael Umana has dedicated his winning penalty to everyone back in his homeland after Los Ticos defeated Greece in their second round World Cup match.

After finishing level at 1-1 after 120 minutes, Costa Rica went on to win the penalty shoot-out 5-3 against the Greeks and the 31-year-old Umana emerged as the hero by converting the winning spot-kick.

“I dedicate the decisive penalty to my family and to all of my people,” Umana said after the game as reported by TuttoMercatoWeb.

“Costa Rica must enjoy themselves at this moment, I did it for them. I was very calm at the moment of the decisive penalty, I dreamt of it last night.

“Many things pass you in the head when you have to kick. [I] had all of Costa Rica behind me but I promised that I would have scored that penalty and I did it.”

Umana scored his country’s fifth and final penalty after Theofanis Gekas failed to convert the fourth penalty for the Greeks.
