USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann has decribed Tim Howard’s performance against Belgium in the Round of 16 as “phenomenal”.

The United States were eliminated by Belgium 2-1 at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, after losing 2-1 in extra-time, and the Everton goalkeeper made a staggering total of 15 saves in the 2-1 defeat – a new World Cup record.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Klinsmann praised Howard, saying that he was “amazing” on the night.

“Tim was outstanding and he kept us in the game,” said Klinsmann. “We knew we would have chances if we kept going forward, but he was absolutely amazing.”

Former Germany striker Klinsmann, who has been in charge of the USA team since 2011, also paid tribute to the rest of his side.

“We are all very proud of our team,” he said. “They gave everything they had and they made their country proud.”

It is also worth mentioning that the USA’s loss to Belgium was only their third defeat in the 10 matches they have played this year.
