Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto was proud yet emotional as he looked back on his side’s performance following their elimination at the quarterfinal stage of the World Cup at the hands of the Netherlands.

The Dutch needed a penalty shootout to defeat the Central American side after the game ended goalless after extra time.

It was a record-breaking campaign for Los Ticos, who exit the 2014 World Cup in Brazil without having lost a game in normal time.

“We are proud of what we have done,” said Pinto in his post-match comments.

“We are not going to leave defeated but with our heads held high.

“Penalties get missed in shootouts and we did everything we could against great opponents.

“We were defensive, we were a bit lucky but we kept our faith.”

The Colombian coach was also asked about what the future could hold for him and Costa Rica:

“It could be a great future, but we should be calm, we need to learn from this.”
