Former Inter defender Walter Samuel has officially joined Basel on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old, who became a free agent after leaving the Nerazzurri at the end of the 2013-14 campaign, was originally linked with a move to Sampdoria but ultimately decided to accept a one-year deal with the reigning Swiss champions instead.

Samuel spoke to Basel’s official website after completing his transfer about how excited he is to begin his new journey in Switzerland and admitted that he’s happy with his choice.

“I am very happy and I’m looking forward to this new challenge and adventure that FC Basel has offered to me,” said the Argentine, who played for Inter from 2005-14 and scored 13 goals in his 172 Serie A appearances for the Milan side.

Basel president Bernhard Heusler also released a statement regarding the defender’s arrival at the Swiss club and praised Samuel as both a person and a player.

“In Walter Samuel Basel have signed a very experienced player with a great personality to boot,” said the club’s chief.

“Once again, this is a transfer that proves how attractive Basel and the Swiss league are becoming.”
