Alberto Zaccheroni has left his job as the coach of Japan but it is unlikely that he will become Italy’s next tactician at this stage.

The 61-year-old has been considered a candidate for the Italy job but currently he would consider retirement over running the Azzurri.

“I am very sad that I have to leave,” Zaccheroni told TuttoMercatoWeb.  “I have spent four extraordinary years here.

“My passion for football stays intact but retirement stays an option.”

Zaccheroni coached Japan from August 2010 until June this year and he was on the bench when the Samurai Blue were eliminated at the group stage of the 2014 World Cup.

Under the guidance of Zaccheroni, Japan won the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar as well as the 2013 East Asian Cup.

Zaccheroni is best remembered by Italian football fans for his scudetto winning season at AC Milan during 1998-99 campaign.
