The former Milan and Azzurri midfielder was Tavecchio’s opposition and had proposed dramatic changes including a reduction of Serie A sides from 20 to 18, a similar reduction of Serie B squads from 24 to 20 and mandating each club have no less than 10 homegrown players.
“I always said I hoped to represent an alternative and a move away from the existing corporate mindset, but it won out,” Albertini stated as he was interviewed by La Gazzetta della Sport after the election results.
The 42-year old was a proponent of altering the manner in which in young players are developed, specifically calling on all clubs to share in the collective responsibility and sacrifice their immediate short-term goals for the sake of increasing the quality and experience of young players throughout Italy.
“The old way of thinking was always going to be difficult to overcome and I wish Tavecchio luck, but it won’t be easy.”
