Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez says it was satisfying to defeat Real Madrid in a friendly Saturday, but the team still needs to improve.

Gomez helped the Tuscan outfit to a 2-1 in the match, contested in Warsaw, by levelling with a header midway through the first half, cancelling out an early Cristiano Ronaldo goal. Marcus Alonso then put the Italians up for good with a goal in the 69th minute.

“[Real Madrid] were not 100 percent tonight but the important thing is to always win and the way in which we have done is important,” Gomez said, according to Firenzeviola.it.

“I’m happy for tonight but we have to improve more.”

Gomez also mentioned that he talks often with Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, who is rumored to be a target for la viola this transfer window.

“Khedira? I always talk with him, he’s a friend of mine.”

Gomez had an injury-plagued first season in Italy after arriving from Bayern Munich last year, appearing in only nine Serie A matches.
