A petition signed by 26,000 people is demanding that Carlo Tavecchio withdraw his candidacy for president of the FIGC.

Tavecchio is under fire from all sides and had seen his massive support wane in the last two weeks after the president of the LND (National Amateur Legaues) was caught making racist comments, causing widespread condemnation and demands to withdraw his candidacy for Italy’s top job.

And now Khalid Chaouki member of the biggest party in the Italian Parliament, the Democratic Party, has revealed that a petition he organised has been signed by more than 26,000 people and will be submitted to the governing bodies of football in the hopes they will force Tavecchio to leave the race.

“Everything we have compiled will be sent to the presidents of FIFA, UEFA and CONI (The Italian Olympic Committee),” Deputai Chaouki told ANSA reporters in Rome.

Meanwhile, a member of Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party has backed Tavecchio, with Senator Guido Viceconte claiming a conspiracy against the 71 year old Tavecchio.

“Tavecchio has been subject to a drip campaign. His presidency would be the best solution for the FIGC,” Viceconte is reported to have said.

The presidency race between Tavecchio and opponent Demetrio Albertini has divided Italy since the racism row began over two weeks ago, with Tavecchio losing support amongst the clubs that once supported him by the day.
