President of the Italian Footballer’s Association Damiano Tommasi has once again reaffirmed his organisation’s support for Demetrio Albertini in his campaign to become FIGC president.

Since launching his campaign, Albertini has enjoyed the support of the players, coaches and referee’s associations, but lacked a foothold with many clubs until the recent racism controversy surrounding the favourite for the job and Albertini’s opponent, Carlo Tavecchio.

“We all know this is an issue that cannot be ignored,” Tommasi noted when speaking about Tavecchio’s refusal to withdraw from the election following his racist comments.

“We are focused on the application of Albertini and only that. Of course we know there is a developing story that is being taken into account and that could lead to a major shift in the coming days.

“I’m positive that when analysing the proposals of the two candidates in the coming days, someone will change their mind before the vote.”

The number of clubs withdrawing their support from Tavecchio’s campaign increases daily, with Brescia, Cagliari, Cesena, Fiorentina, Sassuolo and Sampdoria already switching their allegiances to former Milan midfielder Albertini.
