Conte, who was appointed as the head coach of the on Thursday, was met with high acknowledgment from his former national team coach.

Speaking exclusively to Tuttomercatoweb after the announcement was made, Zoff praised Conte both on the field and off.

“I had him as a player and even then you could see his potential,” Zoff said of his former midfielder.

“[Conte] won three championships in and I think the decision is very appropriate.”

Having witnessed Conte grow from successful player to successful coach, Zoff was adamant in Conte’s abilities to return the Italian squad back into a competitive team.

“The role of a national coach is not much different than a club coach,” he insisted, having made the transition from  coach to boss.
