Roma full-back Federico Balzaretti has admitted being reduced to tears by the groin injury which threatens his career, but insists that he will never give up on a full recovery.

The Giallorossi left-back has been out of action for 10 months after sustaining an injury to his pelvis in a game against Torino, and has suffered numerous setbacks since.

“I admit it, I cried. I cried to my teammates at Roma and I cried on the phone to my wife.”, the 32-year-old told magazine Chi.

I have undergone two surgeries, but the groin pain I suffer is not healed. It caused a degenerative state after the second operation. For doctors, perhaps I can no longer play football.

“I’m working hard to get back to playing, and in the future I want to be able to run to the park with my kids to play with them. Today, I would never be able to play a whole game and I have to start all over again mentally.”

The Italy international finished the interview by heaping praise upon his club, concluding, “Roma has been wonderful to me.”
