Rafa-Benitez-turista-a-NapoliNapoli coach Rafael Benitez has remained defiant despite criticism over his the Azzurri’s poor start to the season, reiterating that they will have a good campaign.

Benítez has found himself under-fire after failing to reach the Champions League group stage and losing two of the opening three games in Serie A, Napoli’s worst start to a season for five years.

Despite the struggles, Benitez but reiterated his confidence in his side as they prepare to take on Palermo on Wednesday.

“I spoke with the president yesterday and we have confidence that the team will have a good season. We are at the beginning of the season and there is a long way to go,” Benítez stated at his pre-match press conference.

However, he has admitted that they must sharpen their attack after a lightweight performance against Udinese in their last match.

We have to improve in front of the opposing team and be more focused in our attack.

“[Gonzalo] Higuain was not 100% and [Jose] Callejon made a difference when he came on, both he and [Dries] Mertens. We could have won with the players we had in the game but it did not happen so I brought players on to win the game.

“I am angry about the matches we lost but I am 100% convinced that the team deserved more. The only thing that matters to me is improving on our failures. We have to be 100% focused on winning.

“If we lose it’s my fault, no problem.”
