Empoli’s assistant coach Francesco Calzona said after the 1-1 draw with Chievo in Serie A that the result reflected the team’s performance on the field and emphasized the impact that Massimo Maccarone made in the match.

The veteran provided the assist that led to Manuel Pucciarelli’s equaliser after the Flying Donkeys had taken the lead through Riccardo Meggiorini  and even had a chance to put the Azzurri in front later on, but his shot was smothered by Francesco Bardi.

“Maccarone handled himself very well,” Calzona told Rai Sport.

“We needed strong forward, a few yards ahead, and that was the decision [we made].

“He provided the assist for Pucciarelli’s goal that saved us, and that is more than okay.

“We are still at the bottom of the table, we just get points for what we do on the field and now we are still looking for our first win.”
