Portanova – Genoa

Genoa defender Daniele Portanova has terminated his contract with his club.

The 35-year-old, who returned to the club back in January 2013 after first featuring for the Grifone during the 1998/99 season, scored two goals in over 30 appearances for the side.

However, over the course of this summer, he saw his captain’s armband handed over to teammate Luca Antonelli and was left out of coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s pre-season plans.

The veteran centre-back’s agent, Matteo Materazzi – the younger brother of retired footballer Marco – spoke out about his client’s treatment by the club, while also analyzing the possibility of him plying his trade with a new team.

“Yes, we had his contract annulled,” he confirmed to Sky Sport Italia.

“[However], regarding Spezia, it’s a good club and [sporting director Guido] Angelozzi would definitely want him.

“But first, [Portanova] wanted to close what has been a bitter chapter, as wearing the colours of Genoa were very important and dear to him.”
