david lopez espanyolNew Napoli signing David Lopez has revealed that he jumped at the chance to join the Azzurri once the offer arrived and insists that he’s ready to take a step forward in his career with the Italian side.

The 24-year-old defensive midfielder finalised a five-year deal with the Partenopei on August 31 after arriving from Espanyol and he admits that he’s looking forward to doing well while adapting to the ways of coach Rafa Benitez, though he’d rather prove himself on the pitch than make any promises to the club’s fans.

Lopez spoke during his official presentation to the press on Thursday about what he’ll be looking to achieve at Napoli and commented on his willingness to work hard for a spot in the squad.

“I knew that keeping a spot in the midfield would be a great challenge in a competitive team,” said the Spaniard.

“However, I don’t limit myself. I’m here to grow and improve, then we’ll see what comes out of it.

“My relationship with Benitez? Before arriving I spoke with him and he explained what he wanted to see from me. My job will be to link the defence with the midfield.

“Why did I choose Napoli? Once the opportunity to join this club came, I didn’t have to think twice about it.

“My idols as a footballer? There isn’t a particular player I look up to though I do admire Sergio Busquets and Xabi Alonso.

“Each player, however, has his own qualities. Right now I’m only looking to improve. There are great players on this team, each with his own special qualities.

“I’m ready to play every three days here, I feel good physically. I’ve already played with Espanyol and I have no problems.

“Napoli’s high objectives don’t scare me. So far I’ve worked just to reach certain goals, now it is time to take the leap in quality.

“A promise to the Napoli fans? I fully understand that people had heard of the possible arrival of [Javier] Mascherano and that they do not know me or know anything about my qualities.

“However, I think it’s right to show my quality on the field rather than talk about it too much.

“I have no problems with Benitez’s tactics, I’m ready to adapt. I have already played in 4-2-3-1 variations along with other formations, I have always enjoyed it.

“Regardless of everything, I know that this is an important season after winning the Coppa Italia last term. It’s time to take a step forward and I’m ready.”
