Marek Hamsik has apologised to the fans with a brief statement after Napoli’s 1-0 home defeat by Chievo on Sunday.
The San Paolo club had a total of 33 shots in a game where they missed a first half penalty through Gonzalo Higuain before conceding early in the second half in what turned out to be the opposition’s only shot on target through Maxi Lopez.
“We had many opportunities throughout the match but if we don’t find the back of the net, we cannot win,” the statement released by Hamsik read.
“Chievo scored from their only shot on target and got the win and we are very sorry for the loss.”
Napoli have suffered a disappointing start to the season having being knocked out from the Champions League play-offs by Athletic Club.
