Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has revealed that the English club hold an option to sign Ricky Alvarez on a permanent transfer from Inter at the end of the season.

The Argentine international joined Sunderland on deadline day, signing a season long loan deal after scoring 14 goals in 90 appearances for the Nerazzurri since joining in July 2011.

Speaking to the Chronicle, Poyet revealed that the Black Cats hold an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

“With Ricky there was an opportunity,” the 46-year-old stated.

“Usually there is an option to buy in these international loans. It’s a great way to help each other. We have a player who cost so much money and is playing with Argentina.

“It’s something unique. We will help him to be a top class Premier League player and he will help us be a better club.”

Alvarez could make his debut this weekend as Sunderland entertain Tottenham at The Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.
