Inter president Erick Thohir has insisted that Ricky Alvarez is still an important component to the Biscione squad despite his departure to Sunderland over the summer.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder joined The Black Cats on a season-long loan on September 1 and the Nerazzurri chief claims that his switch to the Premier League side was based on the San Siro outfit’s surplus of players in his position.

Thohir recently spoke to the press in Jakarta about the Argentine’s exit from Inter and commented on his satisfaction with the Italian club’s other market dealings over the summer.

“The departure of Alvarez? We didn’t want an excess of players in the squad so we decided to send Ricky out on loan,” said the 44-year-old.

“He is still our player and his time at Sunderland will only be a parenthesis. He still remains an important player for Inter.

“The players that have arrived during the market? The team is balanced in every department, with an alternative player for each role.

“Nemanja Vidic? He’s going to be a very important element for us.”
